Using Single Molecules in Electronic Circuits

IBM scientist Emanuel Loertscher is a busy and versatile man. Since 2009 he has been designing and supervising the building of six state-of-the-art “noise-free” labs for ultra-sensitive nanotechnology research. Now, after having worked more as an architect dealing with concrete and heavy installations, he turns back to his original research in nanotechnology, investigating individual molecules as potential electronic building blocks to address the challenges of Moore's Law.

Emanuel was recently invited to write a commentary on this topic for Nature Nanotechnology, which celebrated 40 years of molecular-scale electronics in a focused issue. He recently took a few minutes to answer some questions about his commentary and the field in general.
